Marlon: I'm on a mission; Beijing Games 2008 200 METRES.

COVENTRY Godiva Marlon Devonish believes Team GB selectors have missed a trick by overlooking him for the 100m in Beijing.

He has failed to perform this summer, with a below- par showing at the Crystal Palace Grand Prix hot on the heels of a disappointing seventh-place finish at the Olympic Trials in July.

Devonish, who also withdrew from the 200m at the Beijing Trials in Birmingham, has put his form this season down to a mystery virus and the British selectors seemed to agree with the 32-year-old named in the squad for the 200m and the 4x100m relay squad.

And while the Coventry flyer is happy to be on the plane to the Far East, he is determined to prove his worth on the biggest stage of all in Beijing. "Things haven't panned out how I wanted it to because at worst I thought I'd probably be going for the 100m and my form from last year showed that I'm capable of going quicker," said Devonish.

"I can't sit and sulk and complain about not being selected for the 100m as that's not going to achieve anything is it?

"A lot of my success has been over 100m so I hoped I would be doing both in Beijing, or going for the 100m and the relay.

"I didn't think it would be the 200m and the relay.

I won't have ran a 200 in about eight weeks which is not ideal preparation but I'm still quite optimistic."

Devonish has not officially been named in the relay squad with Harry Aikines-Aryeety and Rikki Fifton joining 100m qualifiers Craig Pickering, Simeon Williamson and Tyrone Edgar in the squad.

Don't forget because of the time difference The Mail will be first with all the latest Olympic news.
