Expenditures in calendar year 1993 for research and development in the United States are expected to reach $162 billion, according to the annual forecast by Battelle Institute, based in Columbus, OH. This represents an increase of $4.6 billion over the $157.4 billion the National Science Foundation estimates actually was to be spent for R&D in 1992. Accounting for inflation, which will take about 2% of that amount, Battelle expects a real increase of less than 1%. The 10-year average increase in R&D since 1982 has been 3.1%
