Market heritage; Your say.

I TAKE issue with David Craggs (20.6.12) describing our exciting plans for Stockton town centre as a 'Calamity for market traders'.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but let''s separate that from the inaccuracies.

Let's not talk down our town nor its ambition. Stockton is a market town with a great market heritage. A thriving market is at the heart of our redevelopment plans.

It will not be less than half the size of the current market. It will accommodate as many traders as the existing market and new covered space north of the Town Hall will provide space for events and additional markets to ensure the market is bigger and better.

Market traders views have not been ignored. We continue to consult with them. Many of their suggestions are included like trading on Dovecot Street and outside the Castlegate Centre. We will also provide support during the redevelopment.

Finally it is untrue that 98% (150,000 people) of our electorate are opposing the changes. Our consultation results show the majority support the proposals.

I haven't spoken to anyone who thinks things should stay as they are. We can give Stockton town centre a new lease of life with something for everyone - a greater range of shops, celebrating our wealth of heritage and historic buildings, a bustling market, fabulous leisure and entertainment, great links to the river and great spaces to enjoy a packed calendar of events.
