HOPKINTON, N.H. - Marian Elva (South) French, 81, of Hopkinton, N.H., and Meredith, N.H., died peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, at her home, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) with her loving family at her side.

She previously resided for many years in Shrewsbury, Mass. She volunteered at the Concord Hospital in Concord, N.H., and the Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Mass., and was a substitute teacher in the Shrewsbury, Mass., schools.

An avid swimmer, she was passionate about spending time at her island home on Lake Winnipesaukee. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Theresa Church, Henniker, N.H.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Herbert S. French Jr. of Hopkinton, N.H.; two sons, Herbert S. French III and his wife, Cynthia, of Boylston, Mass., and David C. French and his wife, Colleen, of New Hampton, N.H.; a daughter, Susan C. French Hull and her husband, Rocky, of Royalton, Vt., a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline French of Malibu Beach, Calif., wife of Marian's son, Thomas S. French, MD, who predeceased her in 2005 and who also valiantly fought ALS for nine years; two brothers, Richard South of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Furman South III, of Sewickley, Pa.; a sister, Helen Straub of Allison Park, Pa.; four grandchildren, Taylor, Lauren, Cameron and Lily; as well as many nieces and nephews and a dedicated group of loving caregivers who made it possible for her to remain in her own home, living with her family despite Lou Gehrig's disease.

A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, June 25, at 11 a.m., in St. Theresa Church in Henniker, N.H. The Rev. Mark Dollard and Rev. Gordan Crouch will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
