Margaret Carter UE meets her excellency the right honourable Michaelle Jean.
As a confirmed monarchist and fifth generation Loyalist I felt compelled to attend the newly appointed Governor General's visit to Winnipeg. I felt honoured that I was able to witness her first official duty. Accordingly, I responded to the invitation and arrived well ahead of the official party led by Mayor Sam Katz with a few dignitaries. I stood outside in the blustery weather for perhaps three-quarters of an hour as part of a small crowd awaiting the arrival of Her Excellency. Shortly afterward, the doors to the Council Chambers were opened and I managed to get a seat with a very good view. Her Excellency spoke from the heart and explained why she had come to our fair city. Several years before, she had assisted with the setting up of a women's shelter in Winnipeg. I knew there had been questions about her appointment, but, after listening to her, I was convinced that she has much to give to our country.
After her presentation, refreshments were served and the crowd propelled me toward Her Honour. She spent considerable time with a group of young people while I waited patiently. As they left, a rather large woman pushed in front of me for her husband to take a picture of the Governor General with his wife. My reaction was to reach out my hand to Her Excellency. She took hold of it and held it until the photo-op was completed. There were many more people who wanted to meet her so I simply said that I was from the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada. My ancestors came to Canada at the time of the American Revolution and we were loyal then as we are now. I wished her well and then was swallowed up by the assembled throng.
