March of the military look; Whether it's a sofa, a bed or a cushion, the military look is a must for the home this winter.

MILITARY style has been on the fashionistas'' radar since Cheryl Cole adopted military couture for Fight For This Love and it has also become a recurring theme in interior design.

Encompassing everything from button detailing and military stripes to muted colours and utilitarian shapes, military style runs the gamut from gaudy decoration to stark minimalism.

In 2012 it is mostly the paired down, disciplined side of military style we are interested in, with natural woods, greys, navy and khaki featuring heavily.

This colour palette is usually used for a hard and masculine effect, but can be softened through clever use of grey.

B&B Italia''s Luis sofa is the ideal blend of comfort and stripped back design. Available in leather or fabric, it''s a system of 56 elements designed to form countless combinations in a range of tonal greys. With a low frame, foam filling and smooth arm rests it''s a classic mix of form and function.

Of course, that doesn''t mean you can''t accessorise with a playful nod to military decoration. There is a whole range of military style cushions, featuring details such as stripes, sleeves, collars and buttons to add a touch of quirkiness to the look. My favourite is the red belted version.

Nobody said life in the armed forces was easy, and sleep deprivation is a big part of military life. But it needn''t be a problem in yours.

A good night''s sleep is vital to help you face the day and, arguably, sleeping alone is actually more conducive to a good night''s sleep. The Starbay walnut Capitaine trundle bed is the perfect size to have the bed all to yourself. Made from black walnut with slatted end panels, its high curved ends and sturdy construction enclose you, giving you a feeling of protection while you sleep.

Finally, make sure your shoes pass inspection with the Starbay Portland shoe care box. This beautiful box, crafted from rosewood, doubles as a footrest while you shine your shoes and includes two drawers for items of shoe care and removable shoe brushes to get you started.

Military style is a trend which will continue well into 2012 so start earning your stripes now and you''ll be sure to graduate with design honours come spring.
