A marathon runner who came third has admitted that he used a bus to complete the final six miles of the race.

Rob Sloan initially claimed that he came third in the Salomon Kielder Marathon because he had done more training.

He shaved 21 minutes off his previous personal best in the Northumberland race.

But he finally came clean by telling the marathon organisers that he ran out of energy after 20 miles.

He then caught a bus used by spectators and completed the rest of the race on public transport.
