Manager profile discussed.
Byline: The Register-GuardSPRINGFIELD - An executive search firm hired to find a new city manager will meet individually with the city councilors and mayor on June 27, Human Resources Director Bill Spiry said at a council subcommittee meeting Monday.
The firm, Bob Murray & Associates of Roseville, Calif., has been engaged to recruit a replacement for City Manager Mike Kelly, who will retire Aug. 31 after 16 years as administrative head of the city.
At a meeting of the council's subcommittee on city manager recruitment, Spiry also presented a draft agreement of a professional services contract he is negotiating with Murray.
For a fee of $17,500 plus expenses of up to $8,500, the firm is to create a profile of what the city council wants for a new city manager; develop an advertising campaign and recruitment brochure to find candidates; recruit, screen and interview candidates; do background checks; and assist with final interviews and negotiations.
Spiry said the council needs to begin thinking in detail about what sort of person would be best to run the city, and gave several examples of what Murray would be looking for when he visits.
"Are we a city that emphasizes the importance of an advanced (university) degree?" Spiry said, as an example.
His question drew this from Councilor Anne Ballew: "We all know a lot of idiots who have master's degrees."
