Man with 5 wives guilty of bigamy.

THE conviction of a man who lived with his five wives and 25 children may drive other polygamists deeper underground, lawyers warned last night.

Tom Green, 52, of Utah, was found guilty of four counts of bigamy and one count of failure to pay child support. He faces a prison sentence of up to 25 years.

His lawyer conceded that Green's undoing was the high profile stance he took, appearing on national television to talk about living with his giant family.

'Green shot his mouth off. He stuck out like a sore thumb and that has resulted in this prosecution,' John Bucher said. 'This verdict could force other families living quietly in polygamous situations to go even deeper underground.'

The case was the first brought against a polygamist in the United States in nearly 50 years and put the spotlight on Utah, where plural marriages once thrived among Mormon pioneers.
