Man raped after accepting lift in city.

A MAN has been raped after accepting a lift off a stranger.

The 24-year-old was attacked on a grassy area above Skinnerburn Road, under the Redheugh Bridge, during the early hours of Monday morning.

The victim had accepted a lift from the attacker, who was in a dark saloon car, from the Marlborough Crescent area of the city, shortly before the incident.

Officers from Northumbria Police's Rape Investigation Team are now hunting the rapist and appealing for witnesses to come forwarded.

Detectives would particularly like to hear from a 'good samaritan' who stopped near the Metro Radio Arena and gave a man a lift home.

Newcastle City Centre Acting Chief Insp Caroline Ord said: "We're carrying out enquiries into this incident and would ask anyone who has any information about the identity of the man responsible, or who saw a car similar to the one the suspect was driving, to get in contact. This was a horrific ordeal for the victim and specially trained officers are working with him to ensure he has the support he needs at this time. Extra patrols will be carried out in the city centre. We would encourage people to make sure they consider their own safety when they're out and have plans to get home. Anyone who is concerned can speak to an officer on patrol."

Witnesses should ring Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191.
