A MAN has been jailed for three months for trying to smuggle 1.7 million Saudi riyals into Bahrain hidden in detergent powder.

The 30-year-old Pakistani was arrested at Bahrain International Airport in August as he arrived on a flight from Saudi Arabia.

A Customs official described how the defendant used "advanced techniques" by covering the detergent with a transparent material to conceal its content when run through an X-ray machine.

"The defendant was panicking which raised my suspicions about him," the 35-year-old Bahraini said in his statement to prosecutors.

"I ran his luggage through an X-ray machine and did not see anything suspicious.

"I saw that a washing detergent did not contain anything strange, but I decided to open it because he looked worried.

"I found 1.7 million Saudi riyals in the detergent."

The defendant was jailed by the Lower Criminal Court yesterday.

He will be deported after completing his sentence.
