Dubai: A salesperson, who was petrified and crying when law enforcement officers apprehended him in a mall after he groped a nine-year-old girl, has been jailed for three months.

The girl walked into a garment store at the mall in Al Quoz and while she was walking around checking the outfits, the 30-year-old Bangladeshi salesperson molested her.

The salesperson thought that the girl was alone in the store when he hugged and molested her against her will, said records.

The girl broke into tears and rushed immediately to her mother to tell her that she had been molested by the salesperson.

The mother informed the police and the 30-year-old defendant was arrested.

The police corporal, who apprehended the salesperson, found him frightened and crying.

On Thursday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Bangladeshi of molesting the child.

He pleaded not guilty.

"I did not grope her. It had happened by mistake and I accidentally bumped into her while she was leaving the store," the defendant told the court.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused will be deported after serving his jail term.

A police corporal testified that the defendant was crying and seemed too scared when police arrived at the mall.

"A security guard at the mall had restrained the defendant ... when we asked the girl what had happened, she said that he touched her. Upon checking CCTV cameras, the salesperson was seen hugging the girl from the back and intentionally groping her," the police said.

The girl told prosecutors that the defendant molested her twice while she was at the mall.

Meanwhile, the accused was cited as admitting to prosecutors that he had touched the girl twice, saying he didn't know why he did that.

He also apologised to the girl's mother for what he had done, said records.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
