Man in dock over fatal assault rap; COURT.
A MAN appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with a fatal assault. Patrick Keating, 47, was brought before Waterford District Court accused of assault causing serious harm.
It's alleged the attack led to the death of Joe O'Brien, 60, who suffered head injuries at an apartment at Scotch Marsh, near Scotch Quay, in the town at about 9.45pm on Monday.
A postmortem revealed the former Waterford Crystal worker and life insurance salesman died after he was beaten about the head.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis carried out the examination at Waterford Regional Hospital on Tuesday.
Det Sgt Donal Donohue, gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Keating, who has an address at Moyne House at Grattan Quay.
He told the court that the accused was charged at 1.02pm yesterday and made "no reply" when informed of the charge.
Inspector John Mulligan made an application for Mr Keating to be remanded in custody, to appear at the court on Monday.
Judge Kennedy granted legal aid and adjourned the case to that date.
A 39-year-old woman also arrested in relation to the same incident, was last night being questioned at Ballybricken Garda station.
