Man held for life buoy.

A MAN has been arrested after stealing a Tyne life buoy.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man Cramlington man when he was found in possession of the ring buoy in Cross Street in Gateshead on Friday.

Following police inquiries he was issued with a caution for the offence.

Chief Inspector David Charlton, of Gateshead Area Command, warned:"This may seem like a prank, but the removal of life buoys from along rivers can have devastating consequences," he said.

"Ring buoys are placed at many locations across the region to help save lives and the public should be aware their removal places lives at risk."

Members of the public who see people interfering with, damaging or removing life-saving equipment like life buoys should report it to police immediately on 101 ext 69191.
