Man dies after swim incident; TRAGEDY.

A MAN died in hospital last night hours after he got into difficulty while swimming.

The tragic incident began at around 5.30pm at Whitestrand, Co Clare, about 4kms from Spanish Point.

The man, named locally as Sean O'Sullivan, 51, from Ennis, had been swimming at the small but popular beach.

A lifeguard saw he was in difficulty and ran to his aid. With the help of others, he brought Mr O'Sullivan ashore and tried to resuscitate him.

The efforts continued even on the Coast Guard helicopter as he was airlifted to University Hospital in Galway. Sadly, they were unsuccessful and Mr O'Sullivan, himself an experienced swimmer, lifeguard and subaqua diver, died yesterday evening.
