Man critical after truck blast.

Byline: By MAEVE QUIGLEY

A MAN was fighting for his life last night after a freak explosion yesterday.

He was part of a team of painters on Cemetery Road in Sligo when a gas cylinder in their lorry blew up around 6pm. The force of the blast threw the man to the ground and a witness saw the victim run from the lorry in flames.

He said: "I heard an unmerciful bang and I saw a man run from the lorry - he was like a ball of fire.

"Three of his colleagues ran to help their pal. They were trying to put out the flames with bits of cloth before some-one came with a fire extinguisher and doused the man who was in agony."

Last night gardai sealed off the area for technical and forensic examination.

No one else was injured.
