Man avoids jail over shop attack; NEWS WIRE.
A 50-YEAR-OLD man who went on a drunken rampage in a Walton convenience store and racially assaulted the Sri Lankan shopkeeper avoided jail.
David Gough, of Stanley Road, in Kirkdale, originally pleaded guilty in August to charges of racially aggravated assault, causing PS700 worth of criminal damage, and theft.
Liverpool magistrates heard that Gough - who also went under the alias of Anthony Rice - had stormed into the All In One convenience store, in Rice Lane, and demanded a bottle of Jack Daniels for free. He then entered the area behind the counter, smashed bottles of wine and hurled cans at the shopkeeper, Sri Lankan-born Anjelo Denisius, whom he also hit with a plastic tray.
Gough was sentenced to 20 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, for the racially aggravated assault, and suspended sentences for the other offences.
