Man arrested in fatal arson attack in Ibaraki Pref.+.

MITO, Japan, June 7 Kyodo

A 52-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder and arson in a fire in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, in March in which the wife of his go-between in an arranged marriage was killed and four others were seriously injured, police said.

Police identified the suspect as Kenji Chiba.

According to police investigations, Chiba allegedly used gasoline to set alight the house of 73-year-old fisherman Masao Imahashi at around 3:30 a.m. on March 1.

Imahashi's 71-year-old wife, Toshiko, died of burns and four other members of the Imahashi family suffered serious injuries, police said, adding that Imahashi was out fishing at the time of the blaze.

Chiba also set himself alight with gasoline and was hospitalized with burns, police said. "I was divorced because of my go-between Imahashi. I tried to kill myself after killing him," police quoted the suspect as saying.
