Man arrested for bird trapping.

A 53-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by the Game Fund in the Larnaca district, suspected of using nets and limesticks to trap birds.

The man was caught near Anafotia at 7 am allegedly carrying nets and limesticks as well as a bird calling device.

Game Fund officers seized the equipment while the man was released after he was charged.

Bird trapping is big business on the island as it fetches thousands of euros in profits to trappers who supply restaurants, which in turn sell them at extortionate prices.

Authorities had cracked down hard on the practice in the run up to Cyprus' accession to the EU in 2004, but according to activists and conservation groups it is now as bad as before with millions of birds, including rare ones, falling victim and giving the island international notoriety.
