Man arrested after report of rocks thrown.

POLICE have arrested a man after reports a knife-wielding shoplifter 'threw rocks' at Middlesbrough shoppers and cars.

Officers were called to Sainsbury's in the town centre at around 5pm on Saturday, following reports a man stole items from the superstore and was carrying knife.

Security guards tackled the man after following him to Burger King inside the Hill Street shopping centre, where they "managed to detain" him according to Cleveland Police.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "The man had allegedly thrown rocks at cars and members of the public. The man was followed and detained by security personnel near to Burger King in the Hill Street Centre."

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft, two counts of criminal damage, common assault, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and affray.

He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
