Man 'not fit' for air rage trial.

Byline: GORDON DEEGAN

AN American charged with air rage offences on an Aer Lingus flight yesterday made an application to court that he was not fit to plead to the offences.

At the third hearing in the case, Ennis District Court, Co Clare was told that Paul Curry, from Las Vegas is a bi-polar manic depressive.

His lawyer said: "His behaviour on the plane may be a symptom of that particular order where what he thinks is normal behaviour other people may think that he is being out of order."

He said that in order to rule whether Curry is fit to plead or not, psychiatric reports would be needed.

Addressing the court earlier Curry said: "After reading Irish law I know I'm in over my head and I need to be represented.

"I can be a babbling idiot but I feel I did nothing wrong and I feel very strongly that I'm innocent in this case."

Curry, 42, is charged with engaging in behaviour of a threatening, abusive or insulting nature with intent to cause a breach of the peace.

The incident happened on a Boston-Shannon flight on July 5.

Five staff members of Aer Lingus, including the captain of the flight were present to give evidence in court yesterday.

A full hearing will take place at a later date.
