Making their mark in a man's world.

THREE female referees took to the pitch last night in the Wearside League - the first time this has happened in the North East supply leagues.

Referee Helen Connelly, and assistants Lynn Brown and Rebecca Welch, were in charge of the all-male teams for the Willington versus Jarrow game in County Durham last night.

Helen, who has been refereeing for eight years, said it was the first time an all-female team had been in charge in the history of both the Wearside League, and all the north east supply leagues.

"I really enjoy refereeing and it is a privilege to be refereeing games at this level," said Helen, currently in her first season in the Wearside League.

"My fellow referees are fantastic and we are all honoured to be involved in the first game of this type in the Wearside League's history.

"We have some fantastic female referees coming through across County Durham."

She added: "I played football at school but there wasn't a lot of encouragement. Now I have got into refereeing as a way of being involved with the game."
