Major snub over mayor; ELECTION 2007..

TORY leader David Cameron faced fresh humiliation yesterday when Sir John Major turn down his proposal to be their London mayoral candidate.

A spokeswoman for Major said: "Sir John believes that his political future is behind him."

Cameron had urged the former PM to stand, calling him a "very good candidate".

The embarrassment is the second in a week for Cameron after both the former BBC director-general Greg Dyke and the Liberal Democrats rejected a Tory plan for Dyke to stand as a joint candidate.
