Major holdups after lorry blaze on the M1.

MAJOR hold-ups were caused on the M1 motorway yesterday after a lorry carrying processed chickens caught fire on the southbound stretch close to the Watford Gap.

Smoke billowing across the road closed the northbound carriageway for a short period from around 6.45am

Long delays continued throughout the day with major diversions signposted away from junctions 17 to 16.

All three lanes of the southbound carriageway were not reopened until 1.23pm.

Frustrated motorists faced major diversions but were later able to crawl along after one lane southbound was reopened, allowing motorists to reach the A45 turn-off at Daventry.
