Major Donation Supports Work of Qatar Centre for Voluntary Activities.

Summary: Qtel's Gift of QR100,000 Provides New Technology for Training and Development

Qtel today announced a donation of QR100,000 to the Qatar Centre for Voluntary Activities (QCVA), to enable the Centre to continue their programme of training and development for volunteers.

In 2006, Qtel provided a major donation to fund the construction of the Centre, which has named a hall after the company. This new donation demonstrates Qtel's ongoing commitment to supporting the goals and mission of QCVA.

The QCVA is one of the region's leading centres for voluntary activity, providing essential training for a wide cross-section of charity workers, emergency aid helpers and community volunteers. It has received the "Arab Centre for Voluntary Activities of the Year" award for its efforts.

Around 50,000 people are registered as volunteers with QCVA, with more than 5,000 "on-call" volunteers, who can provide emergency support as required.

Yousuf Ali Al-Kazim, Secretary General for the QCVA, said: "Our mission is to train, develop and prepare community members to participate in voluntary activities, and we are able to do this because of the enthusiastic support of partners like Qtel. We are very grateful for this new donation, which will add an important element of interactivity and advanced technology to our training schedules."

Qtel's made the donation to QCFVA, as part of its wider CSR strategy, "For Qatar, Hand in Hand." Social welfare is a key theme within Qtel's approach.

Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications, Qtel, said: "Social Welfare is one of the key pillars of our CSR strategy, and we are delighted to provide support for the Qatar Centre for Voluntary Activities. Their work has made an important contribution to the daily activities of the volunteers in Qatar, and to the thousands of people who benefit from their work."

Volunteers trained at QCVA participate in all kinds of activities, ranging from entertaining senior citizens and orphans, visiting patients at hospitals, and helping at official ceremonies and meetings.

Qtel's CSR strategy, being executed under the slogan, "For Qatar, Hand in Hand," looks to partner will local institutions and organizations to provide the most beneficial impact on the community. Qtel has prioritized five key areas for engagement under its CSR strategy -- education; healthcare; environmental issues; social welfare; and sport.

Qtel was named as the winner of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) award at the recent CEO Middle East Awards 2009.

The award was presented to Qtel in recognition for its ongoing efforts to support CSR activity in its home market of Qatar, and for its success in extending its CSR strategy into regional and international markets. 2009 Al Bawaba (
