I am a committee officer representing the ASTM F03 Committee on Gaskets. With the approval of the planning subcommittee chairman and the remainder of executive officers, I am currently assisting a task to determine gasket selection, behavior and prediction using the technique of finite element analysis (FEA). The purpose is to advance the science of predicting long term use and probable point of failure of gaskets in application.

When the users of gaskets design them into specific applications, certain dynamic properties should be available from the gasket manufacturers for the FEA analyst. Our group is looking for probable expansion of written standards (or the writing of new ones) for developing characteristics and data (on F03 non-hyperelastic materials) ultimately usable for the FEA analyst. In other words, this type of data for the fabricator to furnish the end-user, would motivate that end-user to go to the next level of testing and hopefully obtain a statistically high (gasket) applications success rate with the dynamic data furnished.

The committee is looking for the following information:

* What equipment/test fixturing is available to test non-hyperelastic and compressible materials to obtain dynamic properties useful for the FEA analyst?

* FEA analyst assistance in the writing of new or amended standards to include dynamic boundary material characteristics. (ref.: ASTM Vol. 9.02).

* The development of analytical software for fitting non-hyperelastic and compressible material models.

The committee's next meeting will be April 24-26, 2001 at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas, and as pointed out in the ASTM Standardization News publication last January, there will be time given for a workshop on April 25. As of this date, the final program has not yet been finalized, so if interested please contact me for more information.

How can we improve hot tear strength of fluoroelastomer (without changing its type)? What methods can be used to improve mold release of complex shapes of FPM? Is it possible not to use wax/ PE? As we sew, wax gives mold release but lowers hot tear strength. What do we do if optimum addition is not found? (Operation with magnesium oxide made by us and further its addition is not applicable because of high cure speed [we can't "catch up" t90] in this case).

Dear editor:

Could someone give me some guide about chloramine-resistant rubber compounds? Specifically, we need food grade nitrile and EPDM rubber compounds that are resistant to monochloramine solution by using ASTM D6284 test procedure, so that the volume swell is under control. I would appreciate if some one will give me some guidance on this.

Dear editor:

I am using a flat belt around two flat pulleys. How do I know precisely the speed ratio of these two pulleys? I am assuming no "gross slip." Can I calculate the effects of slip and creep? Do I use the pulley diameter or does a flat belt have a predictable pitch diameter? Does anyone have any good reference material on this subject?
