Mail Music: AVRIL CADDEN SIGUR ROS Carling Academy, Glasgow, July 8#####.

Just about as epic and idiosyncratic as their home country of Iceland, Sigur Ros on their day are a phenomenal live experience.

But unfortunately this wasn't their day and instead they were just reasonably entertaining.

Sure, no one would have gone home disappointed but nor did they experience the epic thrills of which this band are capable.

The stand-out moment came thanks to our familiarity with early song Svefvn-G-Englar. It's a truly monolithic tune, with singer and guitarist Jon Thor Birgisson singing the same repetitive line over and over in a hypnotic high-pitch.

Appearing from behind a shadowed screen to soothe us with their mixture of strings-laden comfort music and refined post-rock, they hold more in common with our own Mogwai than their countrywoman Bjork.

While each untitled song from their second album and those from the forthcoming Takk would have been stand-outs in any other band's set but unfortunately this was just Sigur Ros going through the motions a little.
