Magnificent setting was matched by the meals; PubGrub THE MALT HOUSE THE WHARFAGE, IRONBRIDGE, SHROPSHIRE.

WITH Coalbrookdale celebrating the 300th anniversary of iron smelting, you would hope that visitors inevitably drawn from the other side of the world might leave the area feeling satisfied.

We had travelled only 40 miles from central Birmingham, but were still delighted with the food at this lovely pub which is in a magnificent setting just a few hundred yards away from the world's first iron bridge (1779). The view of the Severn from the pavement opposite is spectacular and it would be great to see it in full flow just after an autumn storm - rooms are available from just pounds 70 per couple, including full English breakfast, if you fancy your chances.

Our three children all opted for the tomato and pasta dish with cheddar cheese that stretched like superstring the further they pulled their forks away from the plate. My wife, Collette, tried the mushroom and pepper stroganoff, while I made it a vegetarian nap hand by opting for a honey and wholegrain mustard fresh vegetable stir fry, also served with rice. Our deliciously-fresh meals were just about the two cheapest options as we felt we didn't have the time to do others justice. But you can spend more than pounds 20 for some dishes if your budget allows.

Three Fruit Shoots were a very reasonable pounds 2.40 all in, and my pint of Wood's real ale was lovely and light.

Having checked the price upon ordering, a minor quibble over the price of Collette's glass of wine (pounds 3.90 instead of pounds 4.80) was immediately remedied following the presentation of our bill.

Our vast table was as lovely as the rear room we were in and the staff were really friendly and proud of their pub. As they should be.
