Madonna auction to help poor; celebs.

MADONNA is parting with a painting she has had for more than 20 years to help educate girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The sale is expected to bring in [euro]4million to [euro]5.5million at auction.

Fernand Leger's abstract work Three Women At The Red Table will go under the hammer on May 7 at Sotheby's auction house in New York.

All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Ray of Light Foundation.

The pop diva said she wants "to trade something valuable for something invaluable" in countries where female education is rare or nonexistent.

The singer, 54, purchased Three Women at Sotheby's in 1990.

Leger created the work in 1921 as part of a series depicting women with still-life compositions.

Other examples from the series are in the Dallas Museum of Art and the Beyeler Foundation in Switzerland.
