Made for Each Other.

Made for Each Other. William Steig. New York: Joanna Cotter imprint of Harper Collins, 2000. hardcover, unpaged. $13.95.

A wry array of examples by a lively octogenarian that demonstrates, among other things, the relationships between words and pictures. Using common short phrases as, "Our love is magical," or "Where there's smoke, there's fire," this artist creates couples whose pose, costume, and gesture illuminate the words. The deftly economical, nervous black ink creates humans who seem to exude the associated emotions. Touches of transparent color contribute to the ink's effectiveness by tweaking our subtler sensibilities. A fine addition to any artroom.
