Macronix to acquire ProMOS's 300mm wafer fab.
Taipei, April 19, 2010 (CENS)--Macronix International Co., Ltd. recently announced that it would take over a 300-mm wafer fab from ProMOS Technologies Inc. for around NT$8.5 billion (US$265 million at US$1:NT$32) as part of its plan to quickly snatch up additional capacity to deal with sizzling business.
Macronix Chairman Minn Wu pointed out that the recovering economy has secured his firm a business visibility through next year. He said rather than building such a factory from scratch by itself, acquiring the ProMOS factory would enable his company to quickly obtain additional capacity at lower cost to keep up with the market uptrend.
He expected the factory to begin raking in revenue next year after starting production in June this year.
Wu said his company has NT$27.5 billion (US$859 million) in cash, far sufficient enough for the acquisition spending. He added that the company would spend NT$15-20 billion (US$468-625 million) over the next two years on expansion and recruit 1,500 specialists to develop 32-nm process.
The factory is designed to have maximum output of 45,000 wafers a month, an equivalent of 90,000 wafers at a 200-mm wafer fab.
Industry watchers estimate Macronix to earn NT$2.6 billion (US$82 million) from the deal.
