MYCOGEN RECEIVES APPROVAL IN SPAIN FOR MVP(R) BIOINSECTICIDE; FIRST

APPROVAL IN EUROPE FOR A MYCOGEN CELLCAP(R) ENCAPSULATED PRODUCT
SAN DIEGO, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Mycogen Corp. (NASDAQ: MYCO) announced today that the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has approved MVP(R) bioinsecticide for commercial sale in Spain. Mycogen has been working with the Royal Dutch/Shell Operating Company, Shell Espana to register the product. It is the first biopesticide using Mycogen's novel Cellcap(R) technology to be registered for sale anywhere in Europe.
In June 1991, MVP(R) and M-Trak(TM) bioinsecticides, Mycogen's first two products utilizing the company's proprietary CellCap(R) encapsulation system, were registered for sale by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Mycogen, with several companies of the Royal Dutch/Shell group and other collaborators, currently has registration of MVP(R) bioinsecticide pending in France, Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea and Taiwan and expects to file registration packets in several other key countries later this year.
MVP(R) bioinsecticide contains a naturally occurring and selective Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) toxin that controls caterpillar pests that attack cotton, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, tomatoes, grapes and other crops. The toxin kills insects as they feed on leaves of treated crops, but is nontoxic to beneficial insects, mammals and humans, biodegrades rapidly leaving essentially no residue in foods or groundwater and has no worker re-entry restrictions.
MVP(R) bioinsecticide utilizes Mycogen's proprietary CellCap(R) encapsulation system that encases the B.t. toxins protecting them from rapid environmental degradation. Using recombinant DNA techniques, Mycogen researchers insert the gene that produces the B.t. toxin into another naturally occurring bacterium. After mass fermentation, the recombinant bacteria are killed with a process that stabilizes the microbial cell wall, forming a protective capsule around the insecticidal protein.
"Approval in Spain is particularly important to Mycogen as it represents our first significant international registration under our collaboration with Shell Research Ltd.," said Jerry Caulder, Mycogen's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "The success of this collaboration is evidenced by how well our two organizations have worked together in developing the product and gaining expeditious approval."
"Spain is the seventh-largest market for insecticides worldwide and has market opportunities for MVP(R) bioinsecticide in a variety of crops. Grapes, tomatoes and vegetables are particularly attractive markets, since trials have shown MVP(R) bioinsecticide to have excellent efficacy in these crops. Spain is a major producer of all three crops in Europe, with an estimated 3.7 million planted acres of vines and 148 thousand acres of tomatoes," added Caulder.
Shell Espana will market MVP(R) bioinsecticide in Spain as part of a development agreement signed in 1989. Profits from such sales will be allocated between Mycogen and Shell based on a profit sharing arrangement.
