MYCOGEN'S PARASITIX SUBSIDIARY BUYS

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Mycogen Corp. (NASDAQ: MYCO) announced today that its Parasitix subsidiary has acquired the SafeCide(R) line of environmentally compatible poultry pesticide products from Triad Chemical Corp. of Watkinsville, Ga.
The transaction includes the SafeCide(R) trademark and all technology and United States and Canadian product registrations associated with it. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Parasitix President Charles Dumbrell said the acquisition gives his company an entry to the poultry and animal health markets and supplements a line of protein endotoxins and fatty acid-based products Parasitix plans to begin field testing in the poultry and livestock industries. The SafeCide(R) product line includes boric acid-based insect control baits and a permethrin product sub registered through an international manufacturer. The products are marketed to broiler, egg laying and turkey operations to control darkling beetles, also known as lesser mealworm, and other poultry and animal health pests.
"Our objective in the poultry industry is to assemble and market a complete line of products to meet the demand for environmentally softer pest control," Dumbrell said. "The safety and efficacy of the SafeCide(R) products are well-established, and our test results indicate that we should be able to bring additional biological pest control options on line by next year."
Triad principal Richard Hatcher has agreed to join Parasitix as director of sales, eastern region. He will continue to be based in Watkinsville, in close proximity to many large poultry operations and SafeCide(R)'s established customer base.
In December 1992, Parasitix and Mycogen announced the discovery of unique strains of the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacterium with pesticidal activity against ants. These discoveries are the result of a research collaboration with a leading consumer products manufacturer, and may form the basis for a line of biological products to control household pests. Parasitix also has exclusive license to other Bt strains discovered and patented by Mycogen that are active against parasitic nematodes and flatworms, adult flies and other pests.
Mycogen formed Parasitix in December 1991, as a wholly owned subsidiary to apply Mycogen's novel pest control technology in the development of environmentally compatible products for the treatment and diagnosis of pests affecting animal and human health. Mycogen also provides crop protection products and services. Its products are based on naturally occurring agents developed through the application of genetic engineering techniques and innovative formulations.
