MYCOGEN'S MVP(R) BIOINSECTICIDE REGISTERED FOR COMMERCIAL SALE IN MEXICO

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Mycogen Corp. (NASDAQ: MYCO) announced today that its genetically engineered MVP(R) bioinsecticide has been registered for commercial sale in Mexico.
MVP is a highly selective, environmentally compatible, biological insecticide that controls the diamond back moth, a major pest in vegetable crops. It employs a protein toxin that occurs naturally in the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacterium and Mycogen's proprietary CellCap(R) encapsulation delivery system, which slows the toxin's breakdown in the field, enhancing its performance.
The registration application was filed through Shell Mexico, S.A. de C.V., as part of Mycogen's international biopesticide collaboration with the Royal Dutch Shell Group. It required the approval of Mexico's federal ministries of agriculture, commerce, health and environmental protection. MVP and Mycogen's M-Trak(TM) bioinsecticide, which control the Colorado potato beetle, became the first genetically engineered pesticides to be registered for commercial sale in the United States when they were approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in June 1991. Mycogen's third genetically engineered product, M-Peril(TM), received EPA registration last month.
Although the Mexican MVP registration covers 18 fruit, vegetable and field crops, Mycogen and Shell Mexico initially plan to target large broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage growing operations in central Mexico, according to Mycogen Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jerry D. Caulder.
"A number of the major U.S. food processors that export vegetables from Mexico have told us they want to phase out broad- spectrum chemical pesticides," Caulder said. "MVP is a perfect fit for the integrated pest management programs they're implementing." According to figures compiled by Shell Mexico, Mexican growers used more than $140 million worth of insecticides in 1991. Bt-based bioinsecticides accounted for less than $8 million of that total, but sales of such products grew by about 20 percent over 1990, more than double their growth rate in the U.S. market.
"There are a number of factors creating increased interest in biological pest control, both in the U.S. and in other important growing regions around the world," Caulder said. "Biopesticides break down naturally and leave no residue in food, water or soil; they are harmless to animals and beneficial insects, and they're effective against many pests that have developed resistance to chemicals."
Mycogen and Shell registered MVP for commercial sale in Spain last year, and are pursuing registration in several other countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Turkey and Australia. Through a separate biopesticide marketing agreement with Kubota Corp. in Far East Asia, Mycogen is seeking to register MVP in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
Mycogen is a diversified biotechnology company that develops and markets environmentally compatible biopesticides and improved crop varieties to control pests and increase food production.
