MYCOGEN'S MVP(R) BECOMES FIRST GENETICALLY ENGINEERED BIOPESTICIDE REGISTERED FOR COMMERCIAL SALE IN FRANCE

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Mycogen Corp. (NASDAQ: MYCO) announced today that its MVP(R) Bioinsecticide has received a provisional registration from the government of France for commercial sale to control grapeberry moths, the most important insect pest in European grape vines.
MVP is a highly selective, environmentally compatible, biological insecticide that controls caterpillar pests in a variety of crops. It employs a protein toxin produced by the naturally occurring Bacillus thuringiensis bacterium (Bt) and Mycogen's proprietary CellCap(R) encapsulation delivery system, which prolongs its insecticidal activity. MVP's active ingredient breaks down naturally, leaving no residue in food, water or soil. It is effective against some insects that have developed resistance to chemical pesticides, but is harmless to animals and beneficial insects.
The registration, granted by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, is France's first for a genetically engineered pesticide. It was obtained in collaboration with Agrishell through Mycogen's international biopesticide commercialization agreement with the Royal Dutch Shell Group. It is effective immediately, with the provision that Mycogen provide additional laboratory testing and field performance data by 1997. Mycogen and Shell obtained registrations for MVP in Spain in June 1992, and Mexico in January 1993.
MVP and Mycogen's M-Trak(R) and M-Peril(TM) bioinsecticides, are the only genetically engineered pesticides registered for commercial sale in the United States.
Mycogen President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jerry Caulder said the French registration is a significant step in the company's international commercialization program.
"France is Europe's largest agricultural producer, and is second only to the U.S., worldwide," Caulder noted. "We are also pursuing registrations in Germany and Italy, so the opportunity to demonstrate MVP's effectiveness and environmental advantages in France and Spain will be helpful."
Through a separate biopesticide marketing agreement with Kubota Corp. in Far East Asia, Mycogen is seeking to register MVP(R) in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
Mycogen is a diversified agricultural biotechnology company that develops and markets environmentally compatible biopesticides and improved crop varieties to control pests and increase food and fiber production.
