MYCOGEN'S AGRIGENETICS DIVISION SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH FORAGE GENETICS TO DEVELOP PEST RESISTANT ALFALFA

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mycogen Corp. (NASDAQ: MYCO) announced today that its Agrigenetics division has signed an agreement with Forage Genetics Inc. of West Salem, Wis., to jointly develop and market genetically engineered alfalfa varieties that will be resistant to important insect pests.
Initial research and product development will focus on introducing genes from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacteria into top- performing alfalfa varieties, enabling the plants to produce their own natural insecticide against the destructive alfalfa weevil.
"Forage Genetics is an industry leader in alfalfa research and variety development and we enjoy the same position in Bt technology, so it was a natural fit," said Agrigenetics President John Studebaker.
"The opportunity to work with the Bt technology developed by Agrigenetics is an exciting prospect," said Forage Genetics President Dr. Mark McCaslin. "It opens up a whole new area of research for us."
Studebaker said Forage Genetics will manage marketing the new varieties to the seed industry. Agrigenetics's seed divisions will have access to products developed through the collaboration.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Agrigenetics is the agricultural seed research and marketing subsidiary of Mycogen Corp., a San Diego-based developer of biological pest control and crop protection products.
