MUSICLAND STORES CORPORATION COMMITS $60 MILLION TO STORE DEVELOPMENT

MINNEAPOLIS, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- At its annual meeting, Musicland Stores Corporation (NYSE: MLG) announced today that it would spend $60 million developing approximately 130 new stores (net of closings) during 1993 and on store refurbishment. Sixty-five new music stores under the names Musicland and Sam Goody and 70 new Suncoast Motion Picture Company stores will be opened.
Additionally, its two test strategies, On Cue and Media Play, will be developed further with 15 to 20 new On Cue stores and up to 10 Media Play units. As part of this group, in the third quarter, Media Play will open its first Minnesota store, a 45,000 square foot unit in St. Cloud, Minn. Media Play stores range from 40,000 to 50,000 square feet based in major and medium-size cities. On Cue stores are typically 6,000 square feet located in small markets. Both of these store concepts are "full media" stores offering a complete line of books, music and videos. Overall, the company intends to increase its square footage by over 20 percent in 1993.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, the Musicland Stores Corporation is the largest specialty retailer of pre-recorded home entertainment products in the United States. As of March 31, 1993, the company operated 1,137 stores in 49 states, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom.
