MUSICLAND ANNOUNCES FOURTH QUARTER/YEAR-END SALES

 MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Musicland Stores Corporation (NYSE: MLG) today announced that sales for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1993, rose to $484.5 million compared with $421.0 million last year, a 15.1 percent increase. Comparable-store sales for the same period increased 4.5 percent. For the full year, sales increased to $1.18 billion, up 15.8 percent from the $1.02 billion reported for 1992 with comparable-store sales up 4.6 percent.
 The company also reported a comparable-store sales gain of 4.2 percent for the two month holiday season with all divisions -- Musicland and Sam Goody Music Stores, Suncoast Motion Picture Company, Media Play, On Cue and the United Kingdom -- posting comparable-store sales gains for the period.
 Prerecorded video revenues continued to lead the company's sales performance with 13 percent comparable-store gains during the holiday period and 15 percent for the year. Prerecorded music sales were up approximately 3 percent on a comparable-store basis for the holiday season and the full year.
 The company's newest divisions, Media Play and On Cue, reported double-digit comparable-store sales gains in 1993 in the small number of stores that annualized (one Media Play and 13 On Cue).
 In 1993 the company opened 51 music stores and closed 35, opened 70 Suncoast stores and closed 2, opened 12 Media Play stores and 19 On Cue stores. At Dec. 31, 1993 the company was operating 885 music stores, 320 Suncoast Stores, 13 Media Play stores and 32 On Cue stores.
