MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT SELECTS WICAT TO PROVIDE
 INTEGRATED LEARNING SYSTEMS
OREM, Utah, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wicat Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: WCAT) announced today that Muscogee County School District (Columbus, Ga.) has purchased a total of 14 integrated learning systems (ILSs) from Wicat.
Under terms of the recently signed contract, valued at $775,000, Wicat ILSs will be used in seven middle schools in the district. A total of 478 student and teacher workstations will be able to access Wicat courseware, testware, and management software.
Current district plans call for each student to spend a minimum of 20 minutes per day on an ILS. The sale includes Wicat's two newest courseware products, Wicat Science II Plus and Wicat Writing Plus. Both products feature an interactive, on-line encyclopedia, World Book's Information Finder(TM), and an integrated word processor, Addison-Wesley's Wordbench(TM).
District officials stressed the instructional benefits offered by Wicat's management software, AIMS, in making their decision. "Our middle schools are moving toward an interdisciplinary approach to instruction, combined with team teaching," stated Dr. Carole Rutland, director of middle schools of the Muscogee County School District. "Wicat's management system, AIMS, was the superior solution in supporting our objectives for collaborative planning among our teachers, as well as the ability to create assignments that are truly interdisciplinary in nature."
Each middle school in the district designed its Wicat ILS implementation to meet unique needs on each campus. As a result, some schools have chosen concentrated lab environments, while others have opted for both labs and distributed workstations.
"AIMS also supported our need for installation flexibility," said Rutland. "Other ILS solutions would have restricted our choices in implementation."
Teachers at each middle school will be able to take advantage of Wicat ILS products wherever they may be on campus. Each school will have at least four innovative "floating teacher presentation stations." These stations consist of an IBM PS/2 Model 30 286 computer set up on a wheeled cart and equipped with a large monitor and a laser disc player. Teachers will be able to move these stations from room to room, plugging into the network to access Wicat courseware for display on the large monitor for group or class presentations.
"Educators continue to realize the important benefits available with AIMS' power and flexibility," said Dr. J. Marvin Higbee, senior vice president of Wicat's education division. "With AIMS, educators can easily use computers to design and deliver superior, individualized instruction in a wide variety of settings."
Wicat Systems Inc. is a world leader in technology-based education, and provides products and services to significantly improve learning in schools and industry. Wicat stock is traded in the NASDAQ market under the symbol WCAT.
