MUNSINGWEAR REPORTS INCREASED REVENUES AND PROFITS

MINNEAPOLIS, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Munsingwear, Inc. (NYSE: MUN) today reported total revenues of $12,526,000 and net income of $858,000 ($0.41/share) for the quarter ended April 3, 1993. This compares to revenues of $11,797,000 and net income of $814,000 ($0.39/share) for the same period last year.
Charles J. Campbell, president and chief executive officer, said the 6% revenue increase was the result of additional business in expanded distribution channels and an increase in royalty income due to new licensing agreements added during 1992 and increased revenues from existing license agreements. Campbell stated, "I am happy to report that we have been profitable every full fiscal quarter since the 1991 reorganization and that we continue to increase operating income. However, during the quarter we did encounter sourcing and production flow problems, both of which led to increased costs and loss of revenues". Campbell also stated that, "In recent months, the company has expanded its advertising and marketing programs with the addition of three professional golfers: Phil Blackmar joins our existing pro, Blaine McCallister, on the PGA Tour, and J.C. Snead and Larry Gilbert give us our first representation on the Senior PGA Tour. We've also expanded our television campaign with additional cable network television ads during selected golf tournament telecasts. In addition, the company continues to review its brand and label positioning within all channels of distribution and today is effectively selling to department stores, specialty stores, sporting goods stores, golf pro shops, and national chain stores." Campbell added that "During the second quarter we will be delivering our first Grand Slam tennis line which we have identified as a growing niche market. The company has just agreed to sponsor a new World TeamTennis team, the Minnesota Penguins. The company will make a formal announcement of its World TeamTennis involvement with WTT principal Billie Jean King at a news conference in Minneapolis on May 12. Retailer response to our new tennis line has been tremendous, and we are following it up with additional product for the early-summer retail season."
Campbell stated that he expects total 1993 revenues to increase 15 percent over 1992's $39,844,000 and that he expects significantly improved net income for the year. He also pointed out that the company had exceeded projections for fiscal 1992 but, with the tough retail market conditions that continue to exist, he is not comfortable with increasing the projections for 1993 at this time.
