 MTEL UNITS IN SERVICE UP 45 PERCENT IN 1991
 JACKSON, Miss., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication


Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) today announced that it enjoyed a 45 percent annualized subscriber growth rate last year with 181,200 paging and voice messaging units in service worldwide as of Dec. 31, 1991.
 "We are very pleased with the continuing high rate of growth in subscribers during 1991, which we achieved despite a sluggish economy and the entry of new competition in nationwide messaging," said J. Robert Fugate, chief financial officer of Mtel. "We look forward to another productive and successful year in 1992."
 Mtel's fourth quarter units in service figure includes 123,200 SkyPager units and 20,700 SkyTalk units in the United States, as well as 37,300 paging units in service in the United Kingdom.
 SkyTel units in service (SkyPager and SkyTalk) grew during the fourth quarter at an annualized rate of 30 percent in the United States. Paging units in the United Kingdom increased by an annualized 44 percent in the fourth quarter.
 In 1991, Mtel added 56,000 units in service to its year-end (Dec. 31, 1990) total of 125,200.
 Mtel, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is engaged in businesses that include nationwide paging and voice messaging services (provided through SkyTel Corp.) in the United States; international messaging services provided through Mtel International; nationwide paging services in the United Kingdom; an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corporation (AMSC); air-to-ground and marine telecommunications systems; telephone answering service operations; and a digital microwave system serving Southern California.
