MTEL SELLS INTEREST IN THAILAND VHF PAGING COMPANY

JACKSON, Miss., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: MTEL) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Mtel International, has sold its 20-percent interest in Shinawatra Paging, which provides nationwide paging services on VHF frequencies (e.g. 150-173 MHz) in Thailand. The company sold its interest to Singapore Telecom International (STI), its joint venture partner in Bangkok-based Shinawatra, for $7.3 million.
The company noted that while Shinawatra is a profitable business that has become the largest paging company in Thailand after just three years of operation, it is a non-strategic asset for Mtel because it utilizes VHF frequencies which are not compatible with Mtel's 931.9375 MHz common frequency for nationwide and international wireless messaging. Mtel currently provides coverage on this frequency in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Singapore and Hong Kong, enabling international business people to travel from country to country using a single paging unit or messaging receiver.
"We believe that the sale of our interest in Shinawatra Paging is consistent with Mtel's strategy of promoting the use of a common international messaging frequency," said Alexander H. Good, president of Mtel International. "In order to extend the benefits of an international wireless messaging system to Thailand, Mtel and STI will continue to work with Shinawatra toward the goal of obtaining government licensing for the use of the 931.9375 MHz frequency in Thailand."
Good said that the sale of the company's interest "enables Mtel to provide value for our shareholders while simultaneously continuing our efforts to use 931.9375 MHz as a common frequency and standard for international messaging." Mtel will record a gain of approximately $4.0 million on its books in the third quarter as a result of the transaction.
Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp., headquartered in Jackson, is engaged in businesses which include nationwide and voice messaging services (provided through SkyTel Corp.) in the United States; nationwide paging service provided through joint venture companies in the United Kingdom and Mexico; other investments in international messaging through Mtel International; and an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corp. (AMSC). SkyTel Corp., based in Washington, is the principal subsidiary of Mtel and the leading nationwide wireless messaging company in the U.S. Mtel, which is quoted on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol MTEL, had 1992 revenue of $112.6 million and 291,300 units in service worldwide as of June 30, 1993.
