JACKSON, Miss., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: MTEL) today detailed its previously announced year-end and fourth quarter figures for wireless messaging units in service worldwide as of Dec. 31, 1993.
The company reported a total of 346,200 units in service worldwide at year-end which represents a 42 percent increase over the 1992 units in service total of 244,200.
SkyTel Corp., the company's principal subsidiary, reported units in service of 284,700 (254,800 SkyPager units and 29,900 SkyTalk units) in the United States which is a 41 percent increase over the 1992 units figure, of 202,500.
"SkyTel's unit growth continued at a 41 percent growth rate in 1993 on continued strong demand for SkyTel services and, in particular, growing demand for our enhanced text messaging services which now offer wireless stock quotes and news headlines," said J. Robert Fugate, chief financial officer of Mtel.
Net additions for SkyTel during the fourth quarter were 19,300 units, a 38 percent increase over the 14,000 net additions during the same quarter a year ago.
"When compared to previous fourth quarters, which is typically a slower unit sales period for SkyTel, this was SkyTel's best fourth quarter to date," said Fugate. "It is significant that SkyTel's unit growth is continuing at double-digit levels despite the emergence of new competitors in recent months. We believe that our recently announced long-term company business plan, which emphasizes aggressive pricing and the bundling of local service to our Fortune 500 accounts, will result in continued growth in SkyTel units."
Mtel's new international 1993 units total of 61,500 includes 36,700 units and 20,500 units from established joint venture companies in the United Kingdom and Mexico, respectively, as well as 4,300 units from more recently formed joint venture companies in Latin America and the Asia Pacific Region. This total compares to 41,700 international units a year ago -- a 47 percent increase in international sales.
"Mtel will soon have operations in nearly every major Latin American market. As a result, we expect to report a substantial increase in our international units in service total by the end of 1994," Fugate said.
Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp., headquartered in Jackson, is engaged in business which include nationwide paging and voice messaging services in the United States provided through SkyTel Corp., the country's leading provider of nationwide wireless messaging services; international messaging services provided through Mtel International; and a proposed, advanced two-way Nationwide Wireless Network (NWN).
