MTEL RECEIVES FIRST FCC PIONEER'S PREFERENCE FOR TWO-WAY NATIONWIDE WIRELESS NETWORK(NWN)

JACKSON, Miss., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) said today that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted the company the first final Pioneer's Preference for a two-way Personal Communications System (PCS) in the United States. The FCC has allocated 11 channels for nationwide PCS use, and has assigned one of these nationwide channels to Mtel. Mtel intends to file a formal license application for authority to construct the system as soon as permitted by FCC rules.
The FCC decision, which finalizes a tentative July 1992 decision, assigns 50 kHz of radio spectrum in the 930 MHz band for Mtel to build a two-way wireless network, called Nationwide Wireless Network (NWN). The system will enable people to send and receive wireless messages using laptops, palmtops and new hand-held messaging units called "personal digital assistants" (PDAs) currently being developed by the computer industry. NWN will also utilize acknowledgment messages, or pocket- sized devices capable of returning confirmations of message receipt to senders.
"This is a landmark decision for Mtel, as well as the American public which stands to benefit from two-way wireless, nationwide communications within just two years," said John N. Palmer, chairman and chief executive officer of Mtel. "We applaud this decision as one of the administration's first initiatives in creating the wireless portion of an electronic highway that will give U.S. business a competitive edge in the next decade."
NWN, upon final licensing by the FCC, will operate in at least the top 300 U.S. markets by 1995. Booz, Allen and Hamilton has estimated that there will be as many as 13 million users of wireless data services by the year 2000.
"For people who routinely spend time away from their desks, NWN will be as important as the telephone is today," said Jai P. Bhagat, president of Mtel Technologies Inc., the Mtel subsidiary responsible for the development of the NWN technology and business. "Just as the phone is the prime means of communications for the conventional office, NWN will be a vital means of communications for the `virtual office' of tomorrow."
Bhagat added, "NWN customers will use devices that are portable, lightweight and simple to operate. We believe that virtually every industry in the U.S. will benefit from this technology."
NWN is a "location independent" system, meaning that messages can be sent and received without the need to know even the city in which the other party is located. With a network consisting of more than 3,000 base station receivers and transmitters, NWN will blanket U.S. metropolitan areas and eliminate the need for users to notify the network with "roaming" or location instructions.
Mtel is working with manufacturers to produce stand-alone pocket- sized acknowledgment messages, as well as PCMCIA card and chip set wireless modems to enable notebook computers, PDAs and personal organizers to utilize NWN. The company expects these devices and NWN base station equipment to be available in time for commercial service in 1995.
Using an experimental license granted by the FCC in April 1992, Mtel has already constructed an NWN demonstration system in Dallas. This system enables users to send and receive messages while working in downtown buildings, traveling in moving vehicles or simply walking down the street. The Dallas system was built using proprietary NWN messaging technology developed and implemented by Mtel and Motorola.
Mtel is currently exploring the possibility of working with companies in the telecommunications, software and computer equipment industries regarding joint application and service development for NWN. Nationwide network build-out is expected to cost approximately $100 million. The Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers completed a minority investment in NWN in January 1993, its largest single investment to date.
Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp., headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is engaged in businesses which include nationwide paging and voice messaging services (provided through SkyTel Corp.) in the United States; nationwide paging services provided through joint venture companies in the United Kingdom and Mexico; other investments in international messaging through Mtel International; and an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corp. (AMSC). SkyTel Corp., based in Washington, is the principal subsidiary of Mtel and the leading nationwide wireless messaging company in the U.S., with 217,900 subscribers as of March 31, 1993. Mtel's common stock is quoted on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol MTEL.
