MTEL ENDS YEAR WITH 244,200 UNITS IN SERVICE WORLDWIDE; SKYPAGERS UP 45 PERCENT

JACKSON, Miss., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) today announced record subscriber unit growth worldwide in 1992. Mtel's year end total of 244,200 paging and voice messaging units in service reflects a 45 percent increase in SkyPagers(TM) in the United States, as well as excellent growth in the company's new Mexican joint venture.
The Dec. 31, 1992 figure includes 179,200 SkyPager and 23,300 SkyTalk(TM) units in service in the U.S., as well as 33,200 units in the United Kingdom and 8,500 units in Mexico.
"We expect the record of growth achieved at SkyTel in 1992 to continue at similar levels in 1993 and we remain highly encouraged by the market demand for wireless messaging in the U.S. We're also very pleased by market growth outside the U.S., especially in Mexico," said Robert Fugate, chief financial officer of Mtel.
The Mexico units figure represents Mtel's 49 percent share of the units reported by Communicaciones Mtel (CMtel), the company's joint venture company in Mexico. CMtel began commercial operations in February 1992 and had approximately 17,400 units in service as of Dec. 31, 1992.
In November 1992, Mtel consolidated its Inter-City Paging Ltd. subsidiary in the United Kingdom with Mercury Paging Ltd. Mtel's total of 33,200 units in the U.K. represents its 29 percent share of the units reported by Mercury Paging Ltd., which is now one of the largest paging companies in the U.K. with 114,600 units in service as of Dec. 31, 1992.
Excluding the U.K. results, Mtel's worldwide unit growth represents approximately a 47 percent increase in 1992, which is comparable to a 45 percent unit growth rate in 1991.
