MTEL AND MOTOROLA AGREE TO TEST NEW INTEGRATED CELLULAR TELEPHONE/PAGER; PRODUCT TESTING TO BEGIN SHORTLY IN TWO METROPOLITAN SITES

JACKSON, Miss., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) today announced that SkyTel Corp., its principal subsidiary, and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) have entered into an agreement to market-trial a new communications device that combines cellular telephony with paging. Trial testing of the MicroTAC RSVP(TM) product is expected to commence this month.
The trials will be conducted jointly in Chicago and Washington by Motorola and SkyTel Corp., utilizing the AMPS cellular system and SkyTel's dedicated 931.9375 MHz nationwide paging frequency. The new product will be system-tested to ensure both cellular and paging performance, as well as customer acceptance.
Commenting on the new product, James Caile, vice president of marketing of Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group, said, "The introduction of the MicroTAC RSVP represents the convergence of two leading wireless technologies and is yet another step toward our goal of providing all cellular telephone customers with complete personal communications capability."
David Garrison, president of SkyTel, added, "More than 60 percent of SkyTel service subscribers carry paging devices and cellular telephones, an illustration of how these technologies complement each other. Combining both into one compact device offers business travelers a flexible new communications option."
The new product, which is the size of Motorola's MicroTAC cellular phone, has a numeric pager built in. Memory and weight are comparable to the original MicroTAC, through the utilization of miniaturization technology by Motorola.
When a page is received, the phone alerts the subscriber. By pushing the unit's "Recall" button, the caller's phone number, including area code, is displayed. The subscriber pushes "Send" to call the displayed number.
The combination of paging and cellular technology yields substantial efficiencies and prolongs the device's battery life for days when the unit is used in the page stand-by mode.
Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp., headquartered in Jackson, is engaged in businesses which include nationwide paging and voice messaging services (provided through SkyTel Corp.) in the United States; nationwide paging services provided through joint venture companies in the United Kingdom and Mexico; other investments in international messaging through Mtel International; and an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corp. Mtel's common stock is quoted on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol Mtel.
