MTC CHIEF WINS TRUCKING AWARD; ELECTED IVHS AMERICA VICE-CHAIR

OAKLAND, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) Executive Director Lawrence D. Dahms has been selected to receive the California Trucking Association's Commerce Award for outstanding achievement in promoting California's commerce through aggressive planning for goods movement through the Bay Area. The award will be presented today in Sacramento.
MTC formed a 20-member Freight Advisory Council last fall in recognition of the new emphasis on freight mobility planning in the Intermodal Surface Transportation and Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Made up of representatives of railroads, seaports, trucking firms, air cargo companies, intermodal freight brokers and the military, the advisory group has met three times so far to discuss problems with the metropolitan transportation system and look at opportunities to improve freight movement.
In April, Dahms was elected vice-chair of the Intelligent Vehicle Highway Society of America -- more commonly known as IVHS America -- at the group's third annual meeting in Washington, D.C. IVHS America is both a public/private industrial trade association and a formal advisory committee to the U.S. Department of Transportation in regard to the application of electronic, computer and communications technology to increase the efficiency, safety and productivity of the existing transportation system. Over the six-year life of ISTEA, a nearly $800-million federal investment is expected nationally for IVHS research, development, field testing, engineering and implementation. The federal money is expected to leverage local, state and private funds.
MTC is the transportation planning and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
