 MSA ELECTS TWO VICE PRESIDENTS
 PITTSBURGH, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- John T. Ryan III, president,


chairman and chief executive officer of Mine Safety Appliances Company (NASDAQ: MNES), (MSA), today announced the election of Werner E. Christen and John W. Joy as vice presidents of the company.
 Christen will retain his position as general director, Auergesellschaft, and vice president-Europe, MSA International. He will continue to be based in Berlin.
 Joy will continue to be located at MSA's headquarters in RIDC Park, O'Hara Township, Pa., and maintain his present responsibilities for sales and marketing of safety products. He also retains supervision of the company's distribution network, as well as advertising and market development.
 Christen joined MSA Europe in 1973 as technical coordinator for Europe. He served in various executive positions, including managing director, MSA Britain, prior to being elected director of European Operations in 1986 and vice president-Europe, MSA International last year. He holds engineering degrees from Technical University Berlin and a master of business administration from the Harvard Business School.
 Joy has been employed by MSA since 1957, starting as a sales representative and advancing to product line manager. In 1985, he was named director of sales and market development for the Safety Products Division. Joy has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
