MS to declare day of mourning if Bill against death penalty is tabled.

President Maithripala Sirisena says if a Bill to abolish the death penalty is tabled in Parliament he will declare that day a day of mourning. The President expressed these views while attending an event today to present land deeds to 5000 Mahaweli families.

The President said that attempts are being made by certain members of the Government to abolish capital punishment through Parliament. However he said that Minister Sajith Premadasa has already told him that he supports the death penalty.

He said that NGOs and foreign elements are involved in attempts to stop the implementation of the death penalty. The President insisted that he will not leave room for criminals to destroy the future of the country's children
