MRS. FIELDS AND RED CROSS OFFER UP A 'TASTY' PROPOSITION

DETROIT, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of March as American Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross and Mrs. Fields Cookies are celebrating "The Goodness of Giving," a public service campaign designed to promote the importance of donating blood.
The Red Cross and Mrs. Fields will work together to educate Americans about the need for healthy people to donate blood on a regular basis. During the month-long campaign, posters featuring Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields, and the "Goodness of Giving" theme will be displayed in over 500 Mrs. Fields Cookie stores and over 1,000 American Red Cross blood drives nationwide. In the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region, 11 stores and 10 Red Cross donor centers will participate in the promotion.
"Giving blood is one of the most generous and selfless donations a person can make. It's the universal gift of love and life," said Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Inc. "The American Red Cross estimates that every 12 seconds someone needs blood to survive. By encouraging others to roll up their sleeves, we may help the American Red Cross meet the steady demand for blood."
Blood can help victims survive serious injuries and it replaces blood lost in surgery. Blood and blood components provide vital treatments for cancer patients, and can help people with sickle cell anemia, hemophilia and patients suffering from severe burns.
"We are very excited to have Mrs. Fields' support in promoting the importance of giving blood," said Hector Garcia, acting director of Donor Services for the National American Red Cross Blood Services. "She has supported us for a number of years, and we're enthusiastic about this joint public education campaign."
To further its support, Mrs. Fields will also donate Nibbler cookies for use in the refreshment areas at designated Red Cross blood centers across the country from March 17-31. In southeastern Michigan, cookies will be available at Red Cross blood donor centers in Oak Park, Dearborn, Roseville, Southgate, Livonia, Canton, Bloomfield, the Renaissance Center, Port Huron and Ann Arbor. In the canteen areas donors enjoy a sweet treat and beverage after giving blood.
Headquartered in Washington, the American Red Cross collects and distributes more than one half of the nation's blood supply for patients in more than 3,200 hospitals. The Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region supplies almost 100 percent of the blood used by 59 hospitals in southeastern Michigan.
Mrs. Fields Cookies is based in Park City, Utah. Founded in 1977, the company currently operates more than 500 cookie stores in six countries and is the market leader in the sweet treat and bakery industry.
